The song shows how he knows already that the environment around him is being developed, and when his girl leaves he sees that he didn’t know how much he’d miss her until she was gone, just like he missed the environment. It’s not about one or the other, it’s about everything that you miss when you don’t have it anymore.

i believe that this song is about how love is like paradise and then its broken like getting paved over and that the trees are like all of the things you lose. and then his girlfriend left him. mainly about him losing the girlfriend and how he felt.
